How to Fix YouTube Issues on Chrome

Seven Simple Steps

Why Does YouTube Sometimes Not Work Properly?

By Magic Actions - Thursday, 16 April 2019. Many of you have surely encountered problems more than once on YouTube: the video didn't stream smoothly, it didn't load at all and you saw just a black screen, user interface elements on the YouTube website didn't always load correctly, and so on.

Most of the time, these problems arise on your end because of issues such as faulty or conflicting extensions, problems with your browser or computer, or issues with the Internet connection, but not with YouTube itself, although this sometimes also happens. Usually, you can troubleshoot these issues on YouTube with relatively simple solutions.

What Can I Do to Fix Problems With YouTube?

Here are several tips you can follow to fix issues with YouTube when using the Google Chrome™ browser:

1. Update and Restart Your Chrome
Make sure you're using the latest version of Chrome by going to the Update Checker page. If your Chrome is up to date, exit Chrome completely by pressing "Alt + f then x" or "⌘ + q" on Mac, and then restart it.

2. Reboot Your Router and Check Your Internet Connection
To fix a network problem, just unplug your router from the power source for 12 seconds and plug it back in. Then go to google.com and search for "speed test" to find a website where you can check your Internet connection speed.

3. Enable JavaScript
When JavaScript is disabled, YouTube is prevented from playing videos. Copy and paste chrome://settings/content/javascript into the Chrome URL bar, then enable JavaScript if it has been disabled.

4. Clear Cache and Cookies
Deleting cookies and clearing your cache fixes corrupted local data in Chrome that could prevent YouTube from working properly. Press "Ctrl + Shift + Delete" or "⌘ + Shift + Delete" on Mac, then clear your cache and cookies.

5. Disable Extensions
Extensions can cause problems and interfere with YouTube. Go to the chrome://extensions/ page and disable the extensions one by one to find out which one is causing the problems. Alternatively, you can try Incognito mode, which runs without extensions.

6. Turn off Hardware Acceleration
Disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome can sometimes fix playback issues. Head to the chrome://settings/system page and turn off the "Use hardware acceleration when available" feature.

7. Update and Restart Your Computer
Operating system updates and sometimes even a simple OS restart can also fix YouTube streaming problems.
